Origins of Halloween

Halloween is connected with ancient Celtic festival of Samhain as a celebration of the New year (1st of November).

People light bonfires and wear costumes. Night 
of October 31 had a special meaning in Celtic culture. Summer ends and cold winter starts. The gate between life and death is opened and druids used it to predict the future.
Pope Gregory III made November 1 All saint's day to honor saints and martyrs.Evening before was known as a All Hallows Eve later as Halloween.

Carved pumpkins are believed to be originated from witches. They used collection of skulls with a candle inside to light the way to coven meetings.
