Sahasralinga is a place where many pilgrims come to worship god Shiva because of hundreds of carved Shiva Lingas set in Shalmala river bed. Sahasralinga lies in the Sirsi Taluk in a district of Uttara Kannada of Karnataka, India.
The river Shalmala is known very well for countless carvings on rocks of Shiva Lingas.

When the level of water in river is low most of the Lingas are visible. It is a sacred place and during Hindu festival Shivratri thousands of pilgrims come to do prayer ritual - Poojan.

Recently this river got famous because many internet users claimed these symbols of Lord Shiva are actually creation of extraterrestrial life.

This site was discovered in 1969 by ethnologist Jean Boulbet.

Shiva LingaLingas were probably carved by Sadashiva Raya of the Vijayanagar kingdom during 1678 - 1718.

In Indian society Linga represents symbol of energy and Lord Shiva himself.
